Working Cocker Spaniels & Flatcoated Retrievers
Who we are...
|
Welcome to our small corner of the web! We are Philip and Rachel Birt and we are privileged to live on beautiful heathland with our family of gun dogs in Dorset.
We have a passion for all things canine and particularly the gun dog breeds. Over the last 35 years we've had several different breeds including G.S.D.'s, Labradors, and Border Collies. In fact my first dog, a poodle, was bought for me when I was eleven, to cure my fear of dogs! My experiences in the world of dogs, has been varied; volunteer work with Canine Partners for Independence (CPI), living and working at a breed kennels, training for my City & Guilds Grooming Cert, and teaching agility and running my own agility school. All these played a part in developing my deep interest in dog psychology, and how dogs learn.
Currently our gun dog family consists of working cocker spaniels, our clumber spaniel, and our flatcoated retriever. We hope to be adding some more spaniels in the near future. We hope you enjoy browsing our site... |
What we do...
|
Our gun dogs are part of our lives, and we are fortunate enough to be able to spend much of our day with them. We live with them, play with them, have fun with them and train them - either honing their natural abilities or enjoying flyball or agility....but above all else we love them!
Our gun dogs have excellent temperaments and are all well adjusted, healthy and fit for function. They are our loyal, loving companions, and have the benefits of an active life with the luxury of curling up with us in the evening. We have bred several different working breeds over the years, more recently concentrating on the gun dog breeds, in particular the Flat Coated Retriever and the working variety of Cocker Spaniel. We sometimes have puppies or older gun dogs available. We are not highly competitive, but our own gun dogs enjoy a variety of disciplines, combined with basic obedience and good manners training. We compete at Flyball and train with Hampshire Harriers Flyball Club and enjoy our gundog training sessions with Corbinsbere Gundogs. |
Who we support...
|
During the last few years, with the help of some of our friends we have raised funds for Dogs for the Disabled and are also proud to have two of our working cockers in their training programme.
Peppie is still in training but Vito is now fully qualified and working with his family. |
Over the last 12 months we have become increasingly interested in the amazing work of Medical Detection Dogs a charity that trains dogs to help people with life threatening conditions, giving them greater independence and above all saving their lives on a daily basis, also known as Cancer and Bio Detection Dogs and Medical Alert Dogs . We decided we would like to become more involved and join with others to help them move forward and continue the great start that they have already had to 2013.
We started by supporting their Sponsor Our Puppy Scheme and then signed up for the SNIFF5000 Campaign and we are now pleased to have joined their Volunteers and will be aiming to raise local awareness for this charity in various ways, by delivering leaflets, talking to our friends and fellow dog owners, and by offering help and support wherever it can be most useful.
